I did a fair bit of research before starting this blog, and one of the things I learnt was that Pinterest can be a really useful tool for fashion. You can do a few things with it:
- Set up boards to organise images of outfits you like the look of;
- Search for a specific item you already own, or would like to, and see what other people have styled it with;
- Search for things that you already own and see if you can combine them in new ways;
- Source and shop for new items.
If like me you are interested in writing about fashion and styling and being part of that world – you can also create your own pins that direct people to the material on your blog. My Pinterest is very much a work in progress. I started using it originally for my house redecoration project, and you can also see those boards there as well as some fashion content.
There are lots of really great and wearable outfit ideas for women over 40 on Pinterest, and plenty of great bloggers and influencers to follow of all ages.
Given this I decided I would have a little experiment and see how easy it would me to re-create some summer looks based on what I could find on Pinterest.
Here are my results below and I was surprised how it made me consider some new looks and outfits afresh. Some clothing that I had written off because I decided it did not really suit me got a new lease of life when styling them in a new way. Photographing things also gave me a much better idea of what looked good.
It was also fun to try and re-create the poses, which also made me experiment more and move away from how I usually stand for photos. I had quite a rigid view of my best angles which I was partly forced to revise.
Here are the five looks I tried out.
Look 1 : White summer dress and denim jacket
I bought this white summer dress last year but did not really wear it, as I felt it was a bit too girly and unstructured for me. However I found that combining it with a demin jacket, neutral bag and flat sandals gave it a new lease of life, and I revised my opinion of it.
Get this look : my dress was from Asos last year. If you are in the US then the lovely dress pictured left is available on Amazon, and also ships to the UK. Sosander has a great denim jacket, which comes in a variety of washes and colours. The sandals with the pearl details are not currently available but there is a similar pair on sale via ASOS.
Look 2: White summer dress, sun hat and straw bag
This is the same dress styled in a different way – and dressed up a bit with heeled salads and a round bag. My dress is not quite a bouji as the one on the left, and I don’t have the tan either – however I liked the end result, even if my attempt to recreate the pose was not completely successful…
Get this look – white dress available in the US, or similar version via Amazon as above. Amazon also do a number of round rattan bags including this one which looks really nice. There are many nude heeled sandals out there, try these from Asos with a wearable block heel.
Look 3 : Red and white striped dress outfit
My red and white dress came from M and Co (see below). The one on the left is from Mango and styled up as a Fourth of July outfit – you can read more about that here. My bag is from Zara, and shoes from New Look. The main change that this image encouraged me to make is the way that my hair is styled. I never wear it in a pony tail any more – however I actually like the way it looks here. I am really into stripes this year and find myself drawn to any images involving them, there is something classic and effortlessly chic about them.
Get this look: If you like this dress then you could try this version from Silkfred or SHEIN has a few options including this one. My dress is currently available in black and white stripe. I’m not sure where the sandals are from in the image on the left but they do look like these very popular though obviously pricier ones by Valentino. A similar bag to the image on the left is available here, as signposted from the same blog post.
Outfit 4 : Polka dot playsuit
I’ve had this little polka dot outfit for quite a few years. Its something that I love but don’t usually feel brave enough to wear. However when I found this image on Pinterest I was inspired to give it another go. Its probably something I would reserve for wearing on holiday rather than in the UK, however I actually like the way the outfit came together and think it works quite well with hair in a bun.
Get this look – the version on the left is hand sewn as the post describes. River Island has a slightly more up to date look short sleeved version. Or Asos marketplace has a more vintage inspired version.
Outfit 5 : Ivory summer dress with muted stripe
This is another dress that I have had for a couple of years and again was not absolutely sure was me. However in recreating the look on the left including the pose I have fallen back in love with it. I did not have an identical bag or shoes but I think both outfits work well with these neutral accessories.
Get this look : I can’t find the version in the image on the left -but there are plenty of similar dresses available this season, including the one from M and Co as above, and SHEIN also have a range though generally with a bolder stripe. You could try this one from La Redoute. Boohoo have a very similar bag available to the one pictured left. If you like the neutral wedges then there is lots of choice available including these also from Boohoo.
As I enjoyed the process of creating these outfit combinations, I am planning another post in the Autumn with some other Pinterest inspired looks, perhaps for transitional outfits.
